Painting and drawing, all forms of art are a response by the artist to what he or she sees and thinks.

When selecting work for this site and thinking about what characterises my ‘think’ and ‘see’ I thought of handwriting as an analogy - particularly mine.

Handwriting can vary from the quick, to capture a thought (communicative scrawl) through to ‘neat’ and on to ‘copperplate’ or perfectly formed.

This thinking is the principle behind which the work is organised:

     New Directions

I have now completed three courses of study at the Slade School of Art, New Directions shows me moving seriously into oils, with a limited palette and using coloured grounds:

There is no reliance on the use of pen and ink to hold the pictures together. These new paintings 'pull' the subject out of my colour palette to create a new approach and feeling for my work on a physical and emotional level.

     Fast and Loose

Work created on the spot, in the moment. Like taking down a phone number from someone in a hurry – its there, it works, and has a clarity.

     Life

Life drawing and painting from the model has for the last 16 years been between fast and loose and considered. On one hand pictures are an instant response to a pose that lasts little more than a minute. On the other I am trying to make a complete painting of the male/female form.

     Considered Detail

Painting in this group is completed in the studio often after the result of much thought and consideration. Ideas are often born from a library of 100’s of photographs taken when travelling or from post cards from friends or those bought in motorway service stations!
